Contracciones explores the growing intrusion of large companies in the private lives of their employees. A woman in a senior executive position is depicted with skillful precision. Initially, there is something comical about the company’s definition of a romantic or sexual relationship. However, it turns into morbid lechery  when the director demands intimate details of the employee’s affair with a work colleague.
“What are we willing to do to keep our job? In a world in which we are told that everything is on the verge of exploding – climate crisis, economic crisis, energy crisis, pandemics…– who has the courage to dream of a better future and struggle to achieve it? (…)
Are we part of the system, or simply its fuel? Does work really dignify? Like in all of Mike Bartlett’s texts, the dialogues are precise, with each word, punctuation mark or silence concealing a double meaning; a can of worms about to be opened to let out all the characters’ rage, anguish, pain, blood or vomit. Contracciones is both amusing and harsh: a workplace dystopia in George Orwell’s purest style with shades of black humour.”   Israel Solà
