“My father is Lear, but he has never entered a theatre. I am Cordelia. I am a theatre director. Like her, I am going to look for Lear, I’m going to dare to look at him and I’m going to try to forgive. And I’m going to do it on stage. Every night, a different actor will be Lear, will be my father, a possible father, one who wants to sit in a theatre to talk.
This simulated version of King Lear seeks to be an open door to think about how we relate to our parents, the biological ones, but also the metaphoric ones, including William Shakespeare himself. It is a desktop publication based on a classic, and a classic desktop publication, and hopefully neither of the two. It is a play about the origin, about how what came before pursues us even though we want to ignore it. About how we are built by those who precede us. About how to invent a life that belongs to you without forgetting the past. About how to imagine other possible endings.” Andrea Jiménez
Andrea Jiménez researches the intersections between fiction and reality, theatre and performance in this irreverent adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear. Every night she will direct a different actor playing the main role. This way Andrea opens up an area for encounters with an entire generation of actors and men to reflect on fatherhood, love and forgiveness, in a theatrical exercise that is both brave and playful.
