In 442 B.C. Sophocles wrote one of history’s biggest tragedies: Antigone disobeys the law of Thebes to honour and bury her dear brother Polynices, considered a traitor of the homeland.
The transcendence of Antigone’s heroic gesture, a symbol of resistance and determination –that symbolises the loss of balance between duty and love, family and state, but above all freedom, individual rights as opposed to obedience to the laws and social norms–, has generated innumerable reinterpretations over the centuries.
David Gaitan wrote his Antigone after the disappearance of 43 students, allegedly in the hands of the Mexican government, and uses this event to question representative democracy, the transition of opposition political forces, misinformation and hatred of one’s opponent.
This version revolves around the question of why this myth continues to be relevant?
