Program notes Jose Antonio Canton

This year the OFM’s emblematic Christmas Concert incorporates part of the programme that was performed at Teatro Cervantes’ inauguration on the 17th of December 1870: the overture of the opera William Tell by G. Rossini. Premiered in Paris on the 3rd of August, 1829, must be considered as a true symphonic poem. The opera is based on Friedrich Schiller's play with the same title on the independence of Switzerland from the Hapsburg dynasty in the 14th century. Divided into four distinct parts, the piece as a whole presents great singularity as descriptive music.
Giacomo Puccini composed the Missa di Gloria for orchestra and four-part choir with parts for tenor and baritone soloists as his graduation thesis at the Instituto Musicale Pacini. It was performed for the first time in Lucca on the 12th of July 1880. Puccini’s first major work, in which the influence of other Italian composers can be seen, also reveals his particular creative personality, fed by an extraordinary melodic inspiration and a prodigious and original capacity for instrumentation, which is the essence of his talent, fully revealed in his orchestral preludes.
