Program notes Jose Antonio Canton

Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, Op. 74, ‘Pathétique’, is an indisputable model of romantic symphonism. The title was suggested by Modest, the composer’s brother, with the idea of giving the symphony a passionate and emotional meaning rather than the tragic one subsequently construed. Tchaikovsky began writing the symphony in February 1893, which he dedicated to his nephew and lover Vladimir Davydov. It was premiered on the 28th of October that same year at the Russian Musical Society in Saint Petersburg, nine days before his death.
