José María Bandera and Diego Amador propose breaking out of the inertia in which we are immersed. "We believe that flamenco needs to pause, breathe its essence and share it in an honest way". That motivates them to work together in the same direction for the preservation and revival of Paco de Lucía's work.
The songs that comprise the repertoire of Paqueando are performed with instrumental authenticity, respecting the composition and approach that Bandera knows so well, from personal experience and tours, as the direct disciple of his uncle, the great maestro from Algeciras. The piano and the presence of cante, to which Paco de Lucia always gave so much importance, are novel sound elements.
It is worth noting that, although both are old-school musicians from families with a great artistic tradition, they have evolved between tradition and the avant-garde and are pro-evolution within the genre.
José María Bandera (Algeciras, 1960), a guitarist and composer from a family of flamenco artists, was also a disciple of Paco de Lucía as a member of his septet. He later joined the National Ballet of Spain, where he remained for thirteen years, performing both classical and original works and sharing the stage with Lola Greco, Merche Esmeralda, Antonio Canales, José Antonio, Joaquín Cortes, Javier Latorre and Eva ‘Yerbabuena, among others. José Maria Bandera currently combines his career as a musician with flamenco master classes.
Diego Amador (Seville 1973) IS a multi-instrumentalist musician known as ‘the gypsy Ray Charles’ because of the free and vigorous spirit with which he plays the piano. As a singer of flamenco he stands out for the wide progression of the forms of flamenco he performs. This combination of an exceptional performer and musician who has experienced the roots and innovation of flamenco at home was a gateway to collaborate with major figures such as Tomatito, Camarón de la Isla, Diego El Cigala and Remedios Amaya, among others.
Diego Amador currently combines his tours and productions with Suena flamenco, a mentorship programme for musicians.
