Chile's Newen Afrobeat makes music inspired by the legacy of the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, with a particular mark. They unify Latin and African rhythms with colourful and energetic staging, embedded in a deep social message that talks about their roots and social movements. Newen Afrobeat recovers the groove of an almost forgotten style, and uses the motto of master Kuti, the creator Afrobeat, “music is the weapon”. Newen ('strength' in Mapuche) is what this orchestra uses in the great task of awakening consciences regardless of class, creed or colour; to proclaim universal values that many have lost in the context of a dormant society. The musical and spiritual commitment to a new world "where you and I know we are one".
With a 10-year career and four albums published, Newen Afrobeat have performed on important stages such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Womad, WOMEX and Felabration Lagos, becoming the world’s best known and most played afrobeat band. In 2023 they will present their new album with live concerts throughout Europe and Latin America.
