Christian McBride (Philadelphia, 1972) pays tribute to his idol and mentor Ray Brown in a project involving pianist Benny Green and drummer Greg Hutchinson, other pupils of the influential musician, a double bass player who accompanied no less than Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, who was Ella Fitzgerald's husband and accompanist, who collaborated with Oscar Peterson and led his bands until the 1990s.
McBride, a bassist, double bassist, composer, producer, big band director and arranger, is one of the leading jazzmen of his generation. Backed by veterans such as Benny Carter and Brown, he attracted attention in the 1990s alongside contemporaries such as Roy Hargrove, Benny Green and Joshua Redman. From the acoustic post-bop of his first albums, Gettin' to It (1994) and Number Two Express (1995), he moved on to the versatility of Family Affair (1998) and Sci-Fi (2000), in which he explored electric, funk and soul fusions. Of his eight Grammys, the two that he was awarded for his big band and the one he received with the Trilogy Trio with Chick Corea and Brian Blade are particularly noteworthy. McBride also stood out in Christian McBride's New Jawn (2018) and in The Movement Revisited: A Musical Portrait of Four Icons (2020), in which he remembered Luther King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali.
He is artistic director of the historic Newport Jazz Festival, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, as well as the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. He is also a respected educator in his role as artistic director of Jazz House KiDS and the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions. In addition, he hosts the radio shows ‘Jazz Night in America’ on NPR and ‘The Lowdown: Conversations With Christian’ on SiriusXM. Whether it be behind the bass or away from it, Christian McBride is an artist with one hand always outstretched seeking new challenges and the other extended as a sign of camaraderie.
