Kenny Garrett is the most important North American saxophone and flute player of his generation. Nominated to the Grammys on five occasions, and winner for Best Instrumental Jazz Album in 2010, a year later he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree by the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Since his first concert with Duke Ellington’s orchestra, and in the course of three decades of a stellar career and equally stellar collaborations with maestros such as Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis, Garrett always preserved his own personality, a distinct characteristic sound and melody, even in different musical languages or “situations”.
Sounds from the ancestors (2021), his twentieth album and possibly one of the best of his career, has been acclaimed by critics and distinguished as a masterpiece by the magazine DownBeat. The album contains music that defends without any prejudice the sounds that have marked him –blues, soul, gospel, African music and smooth jazz– and also pays tribute to some of his mentors, such as Art Blakey, Tony Allen and Roy Hargrove.
