Japan has offered to the world an impressive group of jazz pianists, from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Makoto Ozone to Junko Onishi. And now, well into the 21st century, the pianist and composer Hiromi (1979) is the last to join this musical elite. With her live performances and her stellar albums, Hiromi has electrified audiences and critics from east to west, with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the limits of jazz, classic parameters and those of pop, taking improvisation and composition to new musical heights, complexity and sophistication.
This whiz kid was introduced to the general public at the age of 17 when she was invited by Chick Corea to participate in his concerts, and was given a recording contract when she was still a student of music. At present, she is a global star who shares the stage and projects with the best. "I want to keep on learning", she told the journal DownBeat, "so I will always keep my ears wide open, ready to learn every minute that I play".
