MÁLAGAJAZZ Award
Soloist, accompanist, composer, music arranger…few musicians can boast having Kenny Barron’s extraordinary lucidity and natural intuition to discover unexplored rhythmic formulas. Without a doubt one of the most technically talented musicians of modern jazz, his principle virtue is the subtlety and elegance he imbues to music, whether his or someone else’s, which he performs with elegant and exquisite phraseology. These qualities have been sought out by the greatest talents of jazz - Yusef Lateef, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson and Stan Getz – whom he has regularly accompanied on stage and in recording studios.
Although born in Philadelphia, Barron is already a legend as one of the great continuers of the school of Detroit started by Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan. He currently leads trios and quintets, but it is as a soloist that one can best appreciate his elaborate technique, his delicate lyricism and his stunning imagination as an improviser.
