The legend that gives its name of this zarzuela is the story of the spell cast by the mother of the gypsy Amapola, the main character, just before the former’s death. The spell was intended to protect her daughter  from any harm she could suffer because of her beauty, in the form of disappointments in love and unworthy suitors. Ulita, Amapola’s protector fortune-teller, recites the spell to Mario, who was tyring to kiss the gypsy.
La leyenda del beso is one of the major zarzuelas of the 20th century. Its orchestration, skillful integration of soloists and chorus, and above all, the enormous capacity for melodic and lyrical creation are particularly noteworthy. Its famous ‘Intermedio’ is a repertoire piece and one of the usual encores of Spanish orchestras and bands when performing concerts abroad.
