Manuela ‘la Chulapona’, who runs an ironing shop, and José María, a bon vivant who takes advantage of his good looks to seduce women as entertainment, are engaged until Rosario, head worker of the shop, stands in the way between them and woos Jose Maria. The latter goes back to Manuela, his true love, leaving Rosario pregnant of his child. Manuela obliges Jose Maria to assume his responsibility and renounces to him. Rosario, repentant, recognises her errors, Manuela forgives her and offers herself to her old and faithful suitor, Mr. Antonio.
La Chulapona belongs to the trilogy composed by Moreno Torroba about the customs and traditions of Madrid, together with Luisa Fernanda and María Manuela. Its plot does not correspond to the traditional model, and creates a story of great humanity about the everyday people of Madrid, depicting individual stereotypes and their collective life. The masterful union of the libretto, of great literary quality, and the score offers very lyrical and intensely dramatic situations, with characteristic rhythms based on folklore and popular customs, as well as others such as the seguidilla, mazurca, chotis, guajira and habanera.
