For La Scala’s traditional première on December 7th, the most eagerly awaited event of the European cultural calendar, and following the previous year's gala of stars at an almost empty theatre, the new season opened with Verdi's Macbeth and the usual splendour of this VIP event.
After Giovanna d'Arco and Attila, musical director Riccardo Chailly thus completed the series of performances of Giuseppe Verdi's "youth trilogy". Davide Livermore and his inseparable team were in charge of the stage direction, offering a very modern and technological version strongly influenced by cinematography, which is characteristic of the stage director from Turin.
The theatre’s artistic director, Riccardo Chailly, conducted Macbeth, recovering for the occasion the unusual version of 1867. He also incorporated Macbeth’s death, like Claudio Abbado had done some time before, in accordance with the 1847 version. Chailly conducted in a very academic and attentive manner, always precise and respectful towards Verdi’s score.
