Rarely have two artistic disciplines –music and cinema- been brought together as splendidly as in the film about one of Russia’s most important historical figures, the great Tsar Ivan IV. Prokofiev and Eisenstein display their trust in one another as creators, each in their own field, resulting in one of the most unique films in the history of cinema, as well as a secular oratorio of the highest importance in Russian music of the Soviet period. Alexander Stasevich, who had already conducted the film score, appreciating its great musical value, returned to the score in 1961, inserting in it texts of the film, and providing it with an autonomy that makes it possible for it to be performed in concert halls.
With this work, Eisenstein intended to awaken the pride of the Russian people for their triumphs and heroes of the past as a preparation before the imminent German attack, with the beginning, on June 22, 1941, of Operation Red Beard.
