Known as the “first peace army” (they use their voices rather than weapons), the Choir, ballet and Orchestra of the Russian Army of St Petersburg gather on stage some one hundred artists who interpret popular Russian songs, dressed in dazzling costumes and performing stunning choreographies. This group, with a long history, has thus become a veritable artistic ambassador to its country.

The origin of the sets of Songs and Dances of the Russian Army goes back to the World Wars, when they took songs of love and hope to the soldiers at the fronts and hospitals. Later, those voices and many others that joined them in times of peace became the basis of one of the most popular Russian shows in the world. To the popular Russian song repertoire, they gradually added songs from other folkloric traditions of countries they have visited during their frequent tours.

The conductor of the group, Valery Tkachenko, is one of the main ambassadors of ex Soviet Union folklore. The ballet, composed of some forty artists, perform dances that represent agricultural life, love and war. Some of the most spectacular are the “Ukrainian Dance”, the “Dance of the Soldiers”, the “Dance of the sailors” and “The bells of Russia”.
